Kuwohi and Newfound Gap

Kuwohi, formerly known as Clingmans Dome, is the highest point in the Great Smoky Mountains at 6,643 feet. A paved trail leads to the observation tower, which offers panoramic views across the Appalachian Mountains.

Temperatures at the summit can be 10–20 degrees colder than in the valleys. Weather changes quickly, and the road may close because of snow or ice. Parking is limited, so arrive early. Kuwohi and Newfound Gap guide

Hiking and Waterfalls

The park offers trails for beginners and experienced hikers. Some paths are short and easy, while others include steep climbs, rocky terrain and changing weather.

Chimney Tops is a popular 3.5-mile round-trip hike, but it is challenging because of the steep elevation gain. Always check trail conditions before starting.

As of August 2026, the National Park Service lists Laurel Falls Trail as closed for rehabilitation. Current park conditions

Best Time to Visit

Spring is ideal for wildflowers and flowing streams. Summer brings lush green forests but heavier crowds. Fall is famous for colorful leaves, with peak color arriving at different elevations.

Winter is quieter, but high-elevation roads may be icy or closed. Because the park stretches from approximately 875 feet to 6,643 feet, weather can vary dramatically between the valleys and mountain summits. Smokies weather guide

Planning Tips

Great Smoky Mountains National Park does not charge an entrance fee, but vehicles parked for more than 15 minutes must display a parking tag. Current prices are $5 daily, $15 weekly or $40 annually. Parking tag information

Before visiting:

  • Download maps because cell service is unavailable in parts of the park.
  • Fill your gas tank before entering; there are no gas stations inside the park.
  • Bring water, snacks, sunscreen and extra layers.
  • Arrive early at Cades Cove and Kuwohi.
  • Check weather alerts, road closures and trail conditions.
